Two weeks after being arrested, an alleged pimp in New Mexico was indicted by a grand jury on charges of human trafficking and promoting prostitution, after a woman called the National Human Trafficking Resource Center (NHTRC) to report a suspicious situation involving a minor.

The caller had become suspicious of a teenage girl and an older man who seemed unusually possessive of the girl. Not sure what she could do, the woman remembered hearing through word of mouth about a human trafficking hotline. She contacted the NHTRC and said that something just did not feel right about the situation. The NHTRC Call Specialist obtained as much information as possible and immediately reported the situation to the New Mexico Attorney General’s Office and the Albuquerque Police Department.

Armed with the information from the caller, police were able to find an ad on Backpage.com advertising commercial sex with the girl. Several days later, detectives working undercover arranged a date with the girl at a nearby hotel and watched the older man leave the girl’s hotel room minutes before the date. The detectives soon learned that the girl was 17 years old and that the older man was her pimp. They arrested the alleged pimp, who was waiting in his car outside of the hotel. Two weeks later, the alleged pimp was indicted by a grand jury on charges of human trafficking, promoting prostitution, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and tampering with evidence, and he faces up to 7.5 years in jail.
