Illinois Governor Signs Bill Protecting Sexually Exploited Children | August 23, 2010 |

Springfield, IL, September 23, 2010 – Polaris Project commends the Governor of Illinois Pat Quinn for signing HB 6462, “The Illinois Safe Children Act.” Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez and End Demand Illinois - a coalition of survivor activists, service providers, and law enforcement - championed this bill. Effective immediately, this law is the first in the nation to make all minors under the age of 18 who are exploited in prostitution completely immune from prosecution. Under previously existing law, the commercial sexual exploitation of a child was a form of human trafficking carrying severe penalties, but these children were still arrested and prosecuted for prostitution. Polaris Project Releases the Dirty Dozen: State Ratings on Human Trafficking Laws and Policy |

Washington, D.C., August 18, 2010 – Today Polaris Project released its 2010 human trafficking state ratings, featuring the “Dirty Dozen” – twelve states that have failed to enact basic human trafficking provisions or have provisions that fail to adequately address the growing crime. The ratings indicate how equipped states are to respond to human trafficking and serve as a resource for lawmakers on what specific provisions should be enacted to improve each state’s comprehensive approach to combating the issue.

Polaris Commends DC Mayor for Signing Legislation to Combat Human Trafficking | June 24, 2010 |

Washington, DC, June 24, 2010 – On Monday, June 21 Mayor Fenty signed legislation to crack down on the brutal crime of sex and labor trafficking in the nation’s capital. The new law will bring DC up to speed with the majority of states in the nation which criminalize human trafficking, and goes a step further by providing needed services to victims and mandating collection of crucial human trafficking data to improve the District’s response to trafficking crimes.
