D.C. Council Hears Human Trafficking Legislation | July 6, 2009

DC Councilmember Phil Mendelson, chair of the Committee on Public Safety and the Judiciary, introduced the “Prohibition Against Human Trafficking Act” in response to reports indicating the unacceptable level of human trafficking in Washington D.C.  According to Mendelson, “The District lacks laws to adequately address labor and sex trafficking, and coupled with the transient nature of the city, we are a hotspot for human trafficking.  This legislation will create the crime of human trafficking, provide crucial assistance to victims, and will make vital information available to the public and authorities in an effort to swiftly and effectively respond to the crime.”
